Measure the usable area
Record the width and depth in several places, especially when the mat sits in a recess. Check skirting, thresholds, door tracks and any irregular corners. For a surface-laid mat, note the walking route and leave enough space for a safe transition around the edges.
Check the height as well as the footprint
The door leaf must pass freely over the finished mat. Measure the smallest clearance while opening the door through its full arc. A photograph taken from inside and outside helps us understand the threshold and recommend an appropriate profile.
Proportion matters
